She Speaks: Women of Mine Action Unite

Dec 04th, 2025/ Zahra Salih

As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and under the theme “She Speaks: Women of Mine Action Unite,” Shareteah Humanitarian Organization (SHO) proudly brought together courageous and inspiring women from across its mine action teams for a powerful event in Mosul dedicated to amplifying their voices and experiences.

The gathering created a safe and supportive space for women to share their stories — from field challenges to personal achievements — while celebrating their dedication to building safer communities across Iraq. Their handwritten messages, filled with hope, resilience, and solidarity, reflected powerful sentiments:

Their words reached beyond the room, offering encouragement to women everywhere.

This year, the event also highlighted an important achievement: women now represent nearly 40% of SHO’s mine action workforce, a milestone that demonstrates our commitment to gender equality and to fostering environments where women can learn, lead, and thrive. Their presence in operational, technical, and leadership roles continues to strengthen the effectiveness and inclusivity of humanitarian mine action in Iraq.

We were honoured by the participation of UNMAS Iraq, whose support reinforces the importance of empowering women to voice their rights, concerns, and aspirations. Their engagement underscored how diverse perspectives enrich our collective efforts and ensure more resilient and equitable communities.

SHO extends its appreciation to all participating women, to our dedicated teams, and to our partners — including UNMAS and its donors — for their continued commitment to inclusive, equitable, and impactful mine action.

At SHO, we remain committed to ensuring that:

  • Women’s experiences are heard and valued,
  • Their leadership is supported,
  • And their voices continue to drive positive change across the sector.

Together, we unite.
Together, we speak.
Together, we build a future where every woman lives free from violence and full of opportunity.
