Non-Formal Education and Child Protection

Shareteah Humanitarian Organization (SHO) is dedicated to addressing the needs of vulnerable children in Iraq, specifically in the Ninewah Governorate, where a large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees reside. Our program focuses on Non-Formal Education and Child Protection, providing vital support to children affected by conflict, displacement, and the ongoing risk of explosive hazards.

Our mission is to create a safe and secure environment for vulnerable children, ensuring they have access to preventive and responsive protection services. These services include structured psychosocial support, birth registration and civil documentation services, legal assistance, case management, specialized protection assistance, and rehabilitation and reintegration services. In collaboration with UNICEF, our program aims to reach 9,800 children, 400 parents/heads of households, and 600 teachers and school-based social workers across the districts of Hatra, Baaj, Sinjar, and Tel Afar.

Through our Non-Formal Education component, we target children living in areas with recent or ongoing return of displaced populations. We focus on rural areas where fewer non-formal education and child protection awareness-raising activities have been conducted. Our Child Protection component targets parents, heads of households, teachers, and school-based social workers for better awareness of child protection practices and services.

Our approach involves establishing four child-friendly spaces in each of the four target districts within the Ninewah Governorate. These spaces serve as both venues for beneficiaries seeking assistance and participating in planned activities and training, as well as headquarters for SHO teams within each location.

The Non-Formal Education program offers a 12-month remedial class program at the child-friendly spaces in each location, providing catch-up classes, back-to-school assisted learning, and remedial classes based on each child’s educational background and needs.

In parallel, our Child Protection component focuses on capacity-building sessions for parents, caregivers, heads of households, teachers, and school-based social workers. We also establish and support child/adolescent clubs/groups to promote positive behavior change and support peer-to-peer education.

By partnering with UNICEF and focusing on Non-Formal Education and Child Protection in Iraq, SHO is committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children and their communities, helping them overcome the challenges of displacement, conflict, and explosive hazards.
